Current
and Past Employees of Target Companies
You can use internet searches and other means to come up
with the names and contact info for current and past employees of the companies
you want to work for then you have to have the guts to either e-mail them or
cold call them and either tell them the truth or tell them that you're a
journalist doing a story on the company and would they mind if you asked them a
few questions off the record.
If you're telling the truth, tell them I got your name from
(company website, company newsletter, etc.).
I'm interested in applying for a position in department x. Could I ask you a few quick questions about
working at the company.
There will be a pause then they might answer yes or no. If they answer yes, have your questions ready
about J.J. Bigshot, the target hiring boss or boss you would be working for.
You could offer to take the person out to dinner so you can
ask him a few questions. Tell him, how
about I take you out for lunch/ supper wherever you want and ask you a couple
questions?
When headhunters and competitive intelligence consultants
(spies) are looking for information on target companies, they often go to
current employees using any pretense they can to get information.
A common one is that they pretend they're doing market
research or taking a census and ask questions over the phone to the
unsuspecting employee. Some will
actually gossip about the company to a total stranger.
If you have the guts to cold call a prospective boss or
hiring manager, tell them you can be an asset to their company, all you're
asking for is a five-minute interview.
Work for a Big Company or a Small One?
Big companies and small companies are very different. In a big company, you're on your own,
everybody is competing with everyone else for promotions.
Small organizations want you to be a team player, to fit in
and to do all kinds of jobs, even if they're not part of your job
description. If you're an accountant and
they get the big load in, they might want you to help them unload the truck.
You are not limited by job titles or descriptions. Your
ideas and suggestions will be heard and given more attention.
Career advancement and salary increases may be rapid in a
growing company.
You have less job security due to the high rate of failure
for a small business.
You have the opportunity to be involved in the creation or
growth of something big.
You may be involved in the entire organization rather than
in a narrow department. You may be eligible for stock options and profit
sharing.
There is less buraucracy, fewer rules and regulations.
Most small companies want sociable people who get along with
everybody.
A small business often has a strong company culture. If you don't play along with it, you'll be an
outsider and they will want to get rid of you.
One example is the drinking crowd.
At one place, the workers, who were all young, would go out drinking and
eating after work a couple nights a week.
If you didn't do this with them, they felt sleighted and didn't like you
as much as they could have.
A small business tends to fill its labor needs informally
through personal contacts and recommendations from employees. Make friends with people working for small
companies.
Find information on small companies by contacting the
chamber of commerce in the area you would like to work. Get the names of
growing companies in the industry of your choice.
Participate in the local chapter of professional trade
associations related to your career.
Speak with small business bankers, venture capitalists and
small business investment companies or go to their websites.

There are large commercial, online databases that you might
find at local libraries, school guidance offices and employment offices. You can type in the name of the company to
search out its address and other vital statistics about it or by keying in some
of these so-called vital statistics or variables, you can streamline your
search down to the companies you're interested in.
Depending on the database, you can choose a state, county,
zipcode, area code or a region then key in other variables you want like what
the corporation does, the size of the company employee-wise and gross
assets. You type in these variables and
the database will spit back all the corporations that meet your parameters.
