The Job Website Business
Don't expect job websites to magically find you a job
because there are so many job seekers out there and you're just one resume in
the bunch. Get addresses of companies
you're interested in and apply to them directly as well as with your
e-resume.
Know the lingo in your field and apply for every job that
fits for you. The term "sales
person" has at least five other titles depending on which company you're
considering. Find all the titles that
your particular job is called and put resumes out for every title.
There are databases that have just about everything you need
in them in terms of tracking down the names of people in corporations. Consider Lexus Nexus, Infotrac, Aol's Career
Forum and Aol's Headhunter service.
Go to sec.gov for free reports of annual corporate
filings. Simply type in some keywords on
the major search engines like work, career, job, employment, resume, labor,
internship, training, business, etc.
Some of the major search engines are google.com, yahoo.com,
search.com and jobweb.org. Go to
newsgroups to learn more about job searching.
Each of the major internet providers, Aol, Compuserve and
Prodigy, have taken great pains to help out job seekers so subscribe to one or
several and get what you can out of them.
Be wary of so-called employment websites offering
information or services for a fee. Trust
the ones affiliated with a university, government or a good organization but
don't trust any of the others upfront.
I've seen scam websites that offer the cure to all your
problems for $29.95. Kiss your money
good bye.
Beyond job websites, go to search engines and chat groups,
find your particular group of people/ profession and try out the general
chatrooms and websites for networking info.
If you know the name of your trade or professional
organization, try typing it into a search engine like Association of Operating
Room Nurses or if that doesn't work, try Operating Room Nurses or Nurses. You might get a current address and website
out of it.
I got these websites by cruising through a number of search
engines. I make no qualitative
judgments. It's up to you to explore to
see what they offer. You can do it very
quickly. Simply punch up the websites
one by one and scan the first page to get a gist of what they're offering.
This is the only way to learn what's out there, to check it
out from the horse's mouth. In one week,
you can go through all these websites. I
always work the internet while watching TV so it doesn't seem like a chore.
Beware that if you post your resume on the internet, people
can come on and steal your identity.
The magazine Business Week, businessweek.com always
publishes a page of business websites.
